Corals in their World
Lecture by Armin Pleschberger
Corals are referred to as flower animals, and their colorful splendor can put many flower gardens to shame. They are fantastic builders in the oceans, and the coral reefs they construct are the largest structures on Earth not built by humans. The biodiversity in a reef is comparable to that of a tropical rainforest. Corals live in symbiosis with other organisms, such as single-celled algae. During the day, they perform photosynthesis, and at night, they actively consume various organic substances, which they recycle. This allows corals to survive in nutrient-poor environments and keep the ocean clean. A photo dive in the Red Sea is meant to illustrate these interconnections.
