Tasinemetum – The Roman Settlement of Emmersdorf-Rosegg (Carinthia)

Archaeological Evening Lecture by Stefan Pircher und Laura Pösendorfer

Through the discovery and verification in 2014–2017 (led by Paul Gleirscher/kärnten.museum) of two Roman wooden bridges, likely in use at the same time (late 2nd/early 3rd century AD), over the Drava River near Emmersdorf-Rosegg (District Villach-Land), a site previously known primarily for its extensive Hallstatt-era burial mound field came into the focus of scientific study. The material recovered and already processed in the vicinity of the two Drava bridges (by Ursula Schachinger and Christoph Hinker/ ÖAI/ÖAW) illustrates the use of these crossings from the Late La Tène period to the end of the Roman imperial era. Between 2020 and 2023, extensive settlement areas on both banks of the Drava were identified through geophysical surveys (Geosphere Austria GmbH, ÖAI/ÖAW, BDA), sections of which were excavated in 2023 and 2024. Evidence has been found of a regional sanctuary with a potential altar or a statue base, which was enclosed by a temenos. The presentation will showcase initial results from the excavations conducted in 2023 and 2024, as well as provide an outlook on further research in Tasinemetum.
